Township of Hempstead N.Y. selects OpenGov to rapidly enable online permits, including Covid-19 outdoor dining permits for restaurants

June 19, 2020 – The Township of Hempstead, N.Y. has partnered with OpenGov – the industry leader in cloud software for community development management – to rapidly deploy modern permitting software and enable remote operations in response to the Covid-19 crisis.

Using OpenGov’s code enforcement software, the Town is moving the Building Department’s permitting, licensing, and code operations online, enabling a user-friendly portal for applicants and remote access for staff to efficiently process applications.

To help the community get back on its feet during this economic slowdown, Hempstead recently launched the platform to streamline applications and approvals–including new outdoor-dining permits, so eateries can begin to reopen in a safer, limited capacity. With new automation capabilities and an easy, online experience for applicants, the Building Department is aiming for a five-day turnaround time for the new outdoor-dining permit applications, according to a Town spokesman.

“During the COVID-19 pandemic, Hempstead Town’s dedicated workforce is still providing residents with essential services,” said Hempstead Supervisor Don Clavin. “The health of our residents, property owners and workforce are paramount, and by introducing this modern interactive software, we can enhance our vital Building Department services during the current pandemic, as well as in the future. In particular, by loosening restrictions on outdoor dining, we are helping local eateries bring in needed business while allowing them to keep patrons and staff safe through social distancing.”

OpenGov Vice President Claudia Arriaga shared, “We are thrilled to be partnering the Town of Hempstead as they have quickly adapted to better serve their residents and businesses. By modernizing their technology to support their needs, the Town is showing tremendous leadership during these uncertain times, while also setting themselves up for long-term success with new cloud capabilities.”

The Town of Hempstead joins over a thousand public sector organizations leveraging OpenGov to revolutionize work processes with cloud-based software designed specifically for the needs of government.
