Ft. Wright Prepares for Upgrades to Communication, Transparency

The City of Ft. Wright plans to continue to offer first class services and resources for the city’s first responders and the city’s residents as they lay plans to work with Kenton County to upgrade their communications system and increase financial transparency.

The Ft. Wright City Council on Wednesday was updated on the progress of the installation of a new public safety communications system for all of Kenton County’s fire and police departments.

“It will mark the first upgrade of the county’s 1950’s era equipment,” said Kenton County Judge/Executive Kris Knochelmann, as he addressed the council, reporting updates about the project.

Judge Knochelmann went on to report that, in early 2015, Kenton County Fiscal Court commissioned a needs analysis of its public safety radio system. The outcome prompted the Fiscal Court to upgrade Kenton County’s communications to a digital radio system.

“It will take roughly 18 months for Kenton County to convert to the new system.” Judge Knochelmann said.

“It is something that’s well overdue,” said Ft. Wright City Administrator Ed Butler. “It’s the right thing to do, in my opinion.”

Butler and Knochelmann went on to tout another benefit of the upgrade being the ability of the city’s police and fire departments to better communicate across platforms in case of emergency. For example, currently if city first responders need to coordinate emergency efforts with corresponding departments from Cincinnati, the only way to do so effectively is by use of cell phones. This upgrade would eliminate this inefficiency.

Ft. Wright Mayor Dave Hatter also announced future plans for the city to begin using OpenGov.

According to OpenGov’s website, the online platform “sets a new standard across the country for how governments analyze, share, and compare financial data.” It has been implemented recently in the region in Covington, Edgewood, and other local governments.

With this online platform, Mayor Hatter went on to say that residents will have access all aspects of the city’s budget, from high level analysis to a broad overview. The council plans to hold a brief tutorial at next month’s regular council meeting so that, when all of the city’s financial information is updated, residents will be able to comfortably navigate the system.

Other notes:

Longtime Ft. Wright resident Danny VonHandorf addressed the council and thanked the city for the appointment of his son Nick, who was recently hired as the city’s newest police officer.

Vonhandorf went said that the City of Ft. Wright is receiving an excellent police officer.
