Greenville officials build on trust, announce new online tool for accessing city’s budget
GREENVILLE, N.C. (WNCT) – One city in the east is making great strides in increasing transparency with its citizens by opening up its checkbook for all to see.
The city of Greenville announced its new Financial Transparency Tool Thursday.
Citizens can now view, share and download a break-down of the city’s budget online. Information is detailed in both a revenue and expense perspective. Currently, this fiscal year’s and last year’s data are available.
The on-line application is updated monthly, but officials hope to expand to daily updates in the future. City officials spent the last two years creating the easy-to-use interactive application.
The tool in partnership with the web-based platform, “OpenGov” also allows Greenville to compare itself to similar-sized municipalities around the state and country. Within the next 6 months, city officials hope to move towards “performance-based budgeting” to measure efficiency and allocation of resources.
Assistant City Manager Michael Cowin says this tool makes good on the trust, citizens have placed in local government to have the “best interest of the community.”
“Everybody wants to look at Greenville at being a safe place, a great place to work, to raise a family,” Cowin said. “We want to be able to show our community that yes we are utilizing those dollars to the best interest of their life later.”
